Columbia County Saw 204% Increase in Relocations from New York
CBRE, a commercial real estate company, analyzed data from 29 million address changes reported by the US Postal Service in 2020. The results showed that “almost all urban centers have seen an increase in moves,” residents of the subways passing to the majority of places located at short to moderate distances from their urban centers. In New York State, that meant the Hudson Valley and the upstate were prime destinations for New York residents seeking greener pastures.
Columbia County, located 200 miles north of Manhattan, ticks this box, as does Ulster County across the river, which is slightly closer to the city. Of all the counties in the Hudson Valley, Colombia and Ulster experienced the largest year-over-year change in the number of people who moved there from counties in New York, Queens, Kings and the Bronx from 2019 to 2020.
